Oman Strengthens Its Maritime Position: Growth in Ship and Cargo Traffic at Ports in 2025
Date Published: 17 August 2025
The Sultanate of Oman’s ports sector achieved remarkable performance during the first half of 2025, driven by increased vessel traffic, container handling, and cargo throughput. This growth comes alongside vital development initiatives implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology to enhance port infrastructure and strengthen future readiness, in alignment with Oman Vision 2040.
Advanced Operational Performance
Eng. Muhanna bin Moosa Baqer, Director General of Ports at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, stated: “Container handling witnessed a significant increase, with total throughput at the ports of Salalah, Sohar, and Duqm reaching 2,427,195 TEUs during the first half of 2025, compared to 2,173,508 TEUs in the same period of 2024—an 11.7% growth. This reflects the efficiency of logistics operations and the ports’ capacity to meet rising demand.”
He further added: “Omani ports also recorded an increase in vessel arrivals, receiving 6,586 ships during the first half of 2025, compared to 5,930 ships in the same period of 2024—an 11.1% growth. Key contributors to this growth included the ports of Shinas, Sultan Qaboos, and Salalah.”The Director General noted that the total cargo handled across Omani ports reached 70,114,527 tons in the first half of 2025, compared to 66,620,847 tons in the first half of 2024—an increase of 5.2%. Additionally, ports received 50,248 vehicles and 2,694,293 heads of livestock, reflecting the sector’s ability to efficiently serve diverse economic activities.
Development Projects
Baqer emphasized that, as part of the Ministry’s strategic plans to enhance port infrastructure, consultancy services have been awarded for the design and supervision of development works at Khour Gramma, aiming to maximize site readiness and marine utilization. He also announced the awarding of consultancy contracts for the rehabilitation of Shannah and Masirah ports. The eight-month project will involve detailed studies and consultancy services covering marine infrastructure requirements, including berths, breakwaters, and the access bridge, in addition to preparing a master plan and an integrated development framework for the ports. In line with efforts to diversify port logistics services, the Quadrant Marine Solutions & Systems Company—the operator of Shinas Port—has signed a usufruct agreement to establish a marine fuel processing and storage center at the port, supported by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.
An Integrated Logistics Hub
Baqer affirmed that these achievements reflect Oman’s commitment to enhancing its competitiveness in the logistics sector and advancing its strategic vision of becoming a regional hub for maritime transport, backed by world-class infrastructure and facilities capable of accommodating the accelerating pace of trade and investment.
