Community consultation to develop digital taxi services in the Sultanate
Year: 2025
As part of the efforts of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology to enhance digital transformation and develop transportation services, a decision was implemented in April 2025 to mandate taxi drivers to join licensed applications. This decision aims to regulate the sector, improve service quality, and ensure passenger safety by relying on digital solutions that enable access to the service in a safe and transparent manner.
At this stage, the ministry seeks to evaluate the experience of users and drivers after the implementation of the decision, and to gather opinions to develop digital services and enhance their efficiency.
Objectives of the consultation:
- Measuring community satisfaction with the digital services provided thru ride-hailing applications.
- Monitoring the field challenges that emerged after the implementation of the regulatory decision.
- Receiving opinions and suggestions that support the development of the digital system in the transport sector.
- Enhancing community partnership in improving services and ensuring the sustainability of digital transformation in the Sultanate.
Consultation period: June 22 to July 22, 2025
Consultation results: The number of respondents reached 16 participants, who answered six axs related to ways to develop digital taxi services in the Sultanate of Oman. The results showed that 31% of the participants use licensed taxi applications, while 50% of them believe that "speed of access" is the most important feature in using these applications. 51% of the participants indicated that "work and income organization" is the main incentive for taxi drivers to join licensed applications. While 38% indicated that short educational video clips are their preferred way to learn about digital taxi services.
Based on these results, the ministry launched a visual awareness campaign titled "It Matters to You," targeting taxi drivers, with the aim of encouraging their participation in licensed applications. This campaign is part of the ministry's efforts to regulate the sector, improve service quality, and ensure passenger safety thru digital solutions that provide safe and transparent access to taxi services.
