Security Guidelines for Using Social Media Networks

Issued by the Ministry of Transport, Communications & IT as a reference for government entities to securely manage their official social media accounts.

Objectives:

  • Protect official government accounts from hacking and impersonation.

  • Raise cybersecurity awareness among employees.

  • Ensure privacy and data confidentiality.

  • Strengthen transparency and credibility with the public.

Key Areas:

  1. Account Management: Assign an officially designated staff member with security/technical expertise.

  2. Content: Follow official publishing policies; avoid personal use of official accounts.

  3. Privacy & Security: Protect data and coordinate with information security teams.

  4. Devices: Use dedicated devices for official accounts, apply regular updates, and block suspicious apps.

  5. Passwords: Enforce strong policies (≥12 characters, mix of letters, numbers, symbols) and change periodically.

  6. Extra Security Features: Enable 2FA, login alerts, and account activity tracking.

  7. Account Verification: Follow official verification standards; avoid buying followers or changing data post-verification.

  8. If Hacked: Notify relevant authorities, reset passwords, remove unauthorized posts, and recover accounts via official channels.

  9. If Recovery Fails: Contact social media companies directly using official support links.

  10. Audit Checklist: Includes a compliance checklist for employees and IT teams to ensure guidelines are followed.
